What's In a Name?
I have a conundrum.
When I bought him, he was going by "Splash."
And then Leo was chosen by random selection/popular opinion/I liked it the best/it suits him. Barn name settled.
This graceful, attractive beast has -possibly- the WORST registered name to have ever been a name. It's been mentioned before.
Are you ready?
Doctor Jim Bob
Allegedly, the name of the vet in KC when he was born was Doctor Jim Bob. So that's what his owners named him when he was registered. In the sale videos that I have found of him on YouTube, he went by the barn name "Blaze." For, I think, relatively obvious reasons.

I think we technically qualify as a pinto with dat chrome. |
BUT WHAT SHOULD HIS SHOW NAME BE????
Popular opinion at the barn is to keep "Doctor Jim Bob" as it is, and I do think that engraving it in fancy-ass script on things like a show halter would be hilarious. But do I really want to show "Doctor Jim Bob?" I want my badass eventing horse to have a badass name. Or at least a name that means something to me.
Allons-y
The name I would probably show him under. Because I'm a nerd, and he is *technically* a doctor. I have time to decide, but what do you guys think? Are you all about changing names and show names not matching the registered name? Or do you think that a horse should stick with the name that it came with? Trainer K is particularly hardcore about not changing names, and LOVES Doctor Jim Bob. But. I just really don't.
What do you think?
Doctor Jim Bob?
or
Allons-y?
or
Something else I haven't even thought of yet?
I'm sorry but Doctor Jim Bob might win for most unfortunate name I've heard this year 😂 I have no problem changing names. My OTTB's registered name is AJs Steel, and his old owners called him AJ. When I got him I immediately changed his barn name to Jack and showed him under the name Jack Be Quick. I would make his show name something fun or meaningful to you -- I like Allons-y!
ReplyDeletebahahaha his old owner was reallyyyy hesitant to tell me what his registered name was the first time I asked about it. Jack Be Quick is an awesome name! (:
DeleteI get why your trainer likes to keep the registered names but do you really want "Now in the ring Kaity riding Doctor Jim Bob"...
ReplyDeleteI'm snickering writing that. Sadly I've heard worse names but I say do what makes you happy.
We already have a "Bucknaked"...
DeleteI understand why keeping reg names is preferred, but oh my goodness... he deserves something better! :P
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly!!!
DeleteYeah I do not love Doctor Jim Bob. Maybe you could do something similar? Like The Good Doctor or something? It's close enough... :P
ReplyDeleteAllons-y is from Doctor Who - it's catch phrase of the 10th Doctor (my favorite) - so that's sort of where I got the idea for that name because Doctor Who // Doctor Jim Bob... I think that Trainer K and her husband are the only people that love Doctor Jim Bob.
